Do EU citizens need a visa or permesso di soggiorno to move to Italy?+
No. EU citizens have freedom of movement and do not need a visa or a permesso di soggiorno. For stays longer than three months, however, you must register your residence (iscrizione anagrafica) at the local comune and meet a few conditions.
How do EU citizens register residence in Italy?+
After three months you register at the Anagrafe of your comune with proof of a job, self-employment, study, or sufficient resources plus health cover. Once registered you can get your residenza certificate and the tessera sanitaria for the health service.
Do EU citizens need a codice fiscale?+
Yes. The codice fiscale (tax code) is needed for a lease, a bank account, a phone contract, and health registration. EU citizens can request it from the Agenzia delle Entrate. Approdo pre-fills the request from your details.
